HELP! How do I care for “Fair Fish”?
My daughter just came home from the County Fair w/5 bags of “Fair Fish”! Most kids have no clue how to care for a fish, so most end up dying a cruel death.
They should outlaw that!
But anyway, she saved as many as she could from tables, the ground & a couple out of trash cans, but now what?
Luckily I have an old 7 gal aquarium that I’ve filled with bottled water (I figured it had the least “bad” stuff in it), I plugged in this filter contraption (seems to work), I added 3/4 of a tspn of ACE to the water. There’s a thermometer & it’s reading 75. I have a few lil bottles (”Ick Guard”, “pH Down”, & Ammonia Test Solution). I have no clue what I’m doing & I want to give these poor fish a chance. Right now they are swimming in seperate bowls in thier own water from thier bags, but some are very low (as the bags were leaking) & the fish are swimming in thier own excrement. How should I add the fish to the tank? When can I? Any help you could give would be very appreciated!
that’s awful tight, they get to be over 12″ if well cared for so obviously they’ll outgrow that, however they can live a fairly long life in that tank which is better than the life they would have had.
make sure the filter is good, I recommend replacing it with a whisper filter for a 20-40gallon tank because goldfish produce TONS of waste. do 10% water changes everyday until you get a better filter.
I also suggest a bigger tank, any bigger you could go would be great 10gallons are only $10 at most pet stores, I have 3 fair fish in a 10gallon and the oldest is almost 10yrs old (it’s my parent’s fish I won them when I was little before I knew their immense needs but I still believe this is a better fate then what they could have).
after you get a better filter do 20% water changes once a week, other than that feed them and watch for disease. remove dead ones ASAP. good luck!
