Why do Japanese have specific table settings especially the positions of eating utensils?
I learned from this site, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_cuisine, that the Japanese have a specific positions for the utensils like the chopsticks will always be in front facing left, the rice bowl at the left, the soup bowl at the right, etc. Question now is, why? Please answer ASAP.
For the same reason that in America, the fork goes on the left, and the knife and spoon go on the right . . . with the knife closer to the plate than the spoon.
ALL cultures have “proper” ways to do things and following these accepted rules shows one is educated and cultured individual.
Having said that . . . Japanese are extremly gracious and forgiving of Westerners (Gaijin) who do not know how to do things correctly.
